RES PRINCIPAL'S BLOG - ROCKETS REPORT - Sun., Nov. 5, 2017

Dear Reading Elementary "Rockets" Families & Community Members:

We're glad everyone has power back on.  We appreciate everyone's flexibility last Monday when we had to cancel school due to no power.  The SU is working on the notification system so you'll be notified earlier next time.

Kudos and heartfelt thanks to:
  • The parents who helped out with Fright Night!
  • The Reading Rec. Commission who helped plan and execute a safe Halloween experience for our students!
  • Local community members who have volunteered to help out in the library!
Other Items of Interest:

Parent Conferences - All families are encouraged to meet with their child's teacher.  This is an important event for your child.  If you have not scheduled a conference, please contact your child's teacher!

PTO Help - The PTO will be having their annual Pie Sale on Sat., Nov. 18 followed by the 1st annual Chili Cook-Off.  Help is needed from the community and parents to make this happen.  Please contact Tatiana McCarthy if you can help.

Pie Help - On Fri., Nov. 17, students will be baking pies, and need assistance assembling them.  We start at 12:30 and manage to make over 100 pies for sale.   If you can come in Fri., afternoon and assist the students, please contact Sherry Hatt.

Basketball at RES - We have two coaches who have agreed to help coach a co-ed Gr. 3 - 6 team at RES.  Students will meet Sat., Nov. 11, 18, Dec. 2, 9, and 16 from 9 AM - 11 AM. Registration forms must be returned to school by Fri., Nov. 10, in order to participate.  We may add a weekday in Jan., but this is a chance for students to learn skills and play on a team.  Please return forms to the office.

How Much Is Too Much? - Sadly there is an abundance of sad and tragic news on the radio, tv, and of course, online.  Several students have come to school recently and shared horrible news stories (they heard at home) with other students, who then get emotionally distraught.   What parents choose to expose their children to is personal choice, but one thing students like to do is share. Driving to school together is a great time to talk about blessings, plans, memories, and try to avoid the hot news story of death and destruction.
Here's a LINK from Common Sense Media with advice for families regarding this.

Thanksgiving Community Dinner - The annual RES Thanksgiving Community Dinner will occur, Tue., Nov. 21.  Mrs. Knight is the lead contact this year and she could really use some helpers.  A donation list will be posted in the lobby as well as a way to sign up on line if you'd like.  Please contact Sherry Hatt if you'd like to assist with this.

TOOLS FOR SCHOOLS - How Tools for Schools Works - Price Chopper

BOX TOPS ADD UP - During the Holiday cooking, please save those Box Tops for us!   Please ask your relatives and neighbors to clip and collect as well!  Every one of those is worth 10 cents!

PTO - AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon that lets customers enjoy the same wide selection of products, low prices, and convenient shopping features as on Amazon.com. The difference is that when customers shop on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to the charitable organizations selected by customers.  If you'd like to help, please go to smile.amazon.com and choose "Reading Parent Teacher Organization Reading P T O" from the list of organizations.  Every little bit helps our students!
