RES PRINCIPAL'S BLOG - "Rockets Report" - Sun., Oct. 30, 2016

Dear Reading Elementary "Rockets" Families & Community Members,

We are the only SU school system that does not have a designated "day off" for Parent-Teacher Conferences.  In most SU's, there is a "no school day" when parents can come in, or teachers meet in the evenings, and have the day "off" to make up for the extra evening time.   The times that Reading Elementary  teachers are making is on their own time and they are not "paid for it" - but that's the kind of teachers they are!  They all lead with their heart!   We are so fortunate to have each of them!    Thanks for being flexible with them on scheduling your conference.  I know they are all looking forward to it.    If you believe we should have a "designated" day for Parent Conferences, please send an e-mail to me and I will forward it to the "school calendar" committee."

Kudos and heartfelt thanks to:
  • Matt F. for bringing in the sign off the road!
  • Ester Allen for organizing the "Spirit Night!"
  • Everyone who has scheduled a parent conference with their child's teacher!

Act 46 Community Forum -  Please plan to attend this community forum on Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at Reading Elementary School at 6 PM.  Dinner and childcare will be available if you pre-register.  This is a very important information that will outline dramatic effects on this school and community.  Please spread the word and be there to get a complete picture of this important law.   As it stands now the proposed plan includes both Barnard and Reading being only a Pre-K - 2 school with our 3-6th graders heading to Woodstock Elementary effective as soon as the 2018-19 school year.  (OUR current 1st - 4th graders would be bussed to Woodstock if the plan is approved.  Barnard's students would go to Prosper Valley School for Gr. 3-6.)

Picture Day - School picture day IS Thurs., Nov. 10, and all pictures will be in in time for holiday gift giving.  Pre-K Parents of 3 yr. olds are asked to bring them in special for pictures that day - that was the only available day.  Thank you for your support and understanding.  Picture envelopes came home last week - please check your child's book bag.

Outdoor Recess - Temps have dropped, flakes have fallen, and so its time for winter hats, coats, mittens, and boots.   Its super helpful if you check with your child as you pick them up to see if they have all the clothing they bring to school.   We currently have two items in Lost & Found - a grey hoodie and a purple hoodie.  Items hang on the hooks in the front lobby.  Thanks for labeling items as well.

Family Folders - PLEASE send in your folders that are sent home to families from Teacher Libbet.  This is a major way to "reuse" and keep communication current.  Please send them in if you haven't done so.

Emergency Call Alert - Since we've had our first snow, and our first power outage, we need to retest our phone alert system.  Please expect a call at 6 PM Tues., Nov. 1 which will be a TEST call on all your phones.  If you don't receive one, please call Libbet on Tuesday.

Ski Runner Details - Information packets and forms will be coming home in the next week. PLEASE check your students' backpacks. Please note the following dates. In the past the PTO paid 40% of the fee, but this year has not been decided on yet.
Where: Suicide Six Ski Area Base Lodge
When    Fridays 1/6, 1/13, 1/20, 1/27, 2/3, 2/10, 2/17, 3/10 (2:00 – 4:00 PM)
Fee: $75 until 12/01/16 OR $85 after 12/01/2016

Coming Soon - In December we will be having after school clubs on Wednesdays. Time and offerings will be sent home before Thanksgiving!

RES Principal's Blog "Rocket's Report" - Sun., Oct. 23, 2016

Dear Reading Elementary "Rockets" Families & Community Members,

It's time for Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Please contact your teachers directly about scheduling that time.  In my 30 years in education, I have never been in a  school district that didn't have a designated day "off" for parent conferences, but I will work closely with the teachers so they have time to meet with you.

Kudos and heartfelt thanks to:
  • The Pre-K parents who drove students to swimming lessons!
  • The Library for letting us create lavender sachets and pumpkins there!
  • ALL the parents who donated things to, helped out, and attended the Leaf Peepers Breakfast!

MESSAGE FROM OUR PTO:
Last night at our regular monthly meeting the PTO held its annual board elections.  Boolie Sluka resigned as Chair and I resigned as Secretary.  No one accepted nomination for the position of Board Chair and, consequently, the election process was suspended.

While Wade Mullins has graciously agreed to continue to serve as PTO Treasurer, the PTO cannot continue to function without a full slate of officers.  I have attached copies of the PTO bylaws (as enacted in 2008 and amended in 2015) for everyone’s review.  The board consists of a minimum of eight members: three officers (Chair, Secretary and Treasurer) and one classroom parent for each classroom (pre-k, k, 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6).  As indicated in the bylaws, there is nothing that precludes two people from sharing a board position.  Whoever succeeds Boolie and I as Chair and Secretary will have lots of guidance from both of us and Wade.

Elections will be held again on Monday, November 21st.  If no one is willing to step up and serve as Chair or Secretary at the next election cycle all future fundraising events are in jeopardy. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to consider becoming a board member of the PTO.  This is a dedicated group of parents and teachers who work tirelessly to provide educational opportunities for our children and promote the importance of our school within the community.    If anyone is interested in serving in either an officer position or as a classroom parent please feel free to contact either myself, Boolie or Wade.

RES PRINCIPAL'S BLOG - Sun., Oct. 16, 2016

Dear Reading Elementary "Rockets" Families & Community Members,

There will be lots of attachments to this week's e-mail to families which will also be posted on the website.  We've got several important events happening here at Reading, and hope you'll join us for them!

Kudos and heartfelt thanks to:
  • Sheri Macri for spending countless hours as a part of the Act 46 Study Committee meeting.   Thank you Shiri for insuring that Reading's voice is heard in the process.
  • Mr. Barbour for all his help with the pumpkin patch!
Other Items of Interest:

Leaf Peeper's Breakfast sponsored by the PTO - Sun., Oct. 23, 2016, 8 - 10:30 AM.  The PTO wants to remind everyone that our annual Leaf Peeper Pancake Breakfast is right around the corner (Oct 23rd).  A donations list will be sent home on Monday.  Items needed include eggs, oj, milk, coffee, fruit, baked goods, maple syrup, coffee cups and butter. Donations need to be brought to RES by next Friday 10/21.  More information to come.

Pumpkin Raffle The Reading PTO will hold its fifth annual Great Pumpkin Raffle this year! Each classroom will decorate a pumpkin to be raffled off. The lucky winners will have a one of a kind Halloween decoration!

Tickets cost $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Students can return tickets and money in an envelope to their teachers.  Any checks should be made out to the Reading School PTO.  Children can get extra tickets from Teacher Libbet, and they will also be available at the Leaf Peeper Breakfast on Sunday, October 23.  The winners will be drawn at the breakfast, and the pumpkins will be ready to take home any day that week.  Celebrate all the silliness and spookiness of Halloween and help raise funds to support school activities such as field trips and swim lessons.

Pre-K Request Pre-k would like to make a fire engine out of a big box. If anyone has an empty appliance box that we could have, it would be greatly appreciated and put to good use. Or, does anyone know of a nearby resource (store, etc.) where I could possibly get one? Thank you!

Picture Day - Due to a scheduling conflict with the VT Agency of Ed. commitments, school picture day has had to be rescheduled to Thurs., Nov. 10, and all pictures will be in in time for holiday gift giving.  Thank you for your support and understanding.  Picture envelopes will be coming home the last week of October.

ART EVENTS - A few upcoming arts-related events with our loyal community partner, The Reading Public Library and Librarian, Tony Pikramenos:
  • Tuesday, October 18—Lavender Sachets, 10:30-11:15 am--Kindergarten students will walk to the library during art class to sew sachets and fill them with lavender grown and harvested on the front walk of the library.
  • Saturday, October 22—Make-a-Plate Workshop, 10 am-2 pm—Anyone in the community is welcome to draw a circular design that will be turned into a wonderful keepsake plate.  My kitchen cupboard is full of great memories of my kids’ artistic efforts through the years.  These plates will be ready around Thanksgiving and make terrific gifts for all ages.  The library subsidizes a portion of the cost of each plate, so the price is very reasonable.  Join us!
  • Tuesday, October 25—Halloween Pumpkin Carving, 8:15-2:30 pm—Each of the classes, K, ½, ¾, 5/6 will walk to the library during their regular art time to carve pumpkins for display at Reading’s Fright Night on Saturday, October 29.  The pumpkins were planted by Mrs. Drinker’s first and second graders last spring behind the Reading Firehouse. Adult helpers for each class are welcome and encouraged! Please let your student’s teacher know if you are able to assist with this project.  Thanks for your support. Take heart in art, Lisa Kaija, lkaija@wcsu.net
MESSAGES FROM OUR TEACHERS -

From Mrs. Faulkner, Pre-K:
We will be having a visit from Curt Allen and a fire truck on Wednesday.  Next week we will be exploring fire safety and playing firefighter.  If anyone has any child rain coats that we can use for firefighter gear, it would really enhance our pretend play.  Thanks!

Our swim lessons start this week on Thursday and Friday.  Please be sure to check your email for pertinent information and to print forms that need to be filled out before your child can attend swim lessons.

I request that children only bring toys on their share day.  Bringing them at other times is a distraction from learning and prevents them from utilizing toys and materials in the pre-k classroom.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

From Mrs. Knight, Library-Media/Tech Specialist Teacher:
In library time on Monday, we checked out books for the first time in several years. All students checked out a book two Mondays ago, and hopefully brought them home and read them with you! Can you please send them back in tomorrow so they can check out another one? We've spent some time reviewing the "care" of library books, so if you can help reinforce that at home, we'd appreciate it. Next weekend I will be at a "Keyboarding without Tears" training in Portland, Maine, and we'll be incorporating that into classrooms as well during "tech" time.
