RES PRINCIPAL'S BLOG - ROCKETS REPORT - Sun., May 28, 2017

Dear Reading Elementary "Rockets" Families & Community Members:

Kudos and heartfelt thanks to:
  • The parents who drove our students to swimming in Pre-K, K, 1/2 and 5/6!
  • Everyone who supported their students during testing the last few weeks by having them here on time and ready to demonstrate their knowledge!
  • Mr. Dino Zampini for volunteering and helping with "spring clean-up" on our grounds!
Other Items of Interest:

Act 46 Revote - There is a "revote" this Wed., May 31, on whether or not RES should become part of the consolidated supervisory district.  Voting will be from 7 AM - 7 PM at the Town Hall.  There have been consistent alternative structure committee meetings.  For more information, please contact Board Member Donna Martin, or community members Rachel Navaro, or Peter Seman.

PBIS Schoolwide Celebrations - As a school, we encourage positive behavior by students receiving blue "respect" tiles which go into a large "Respect Rocket" every Friday.  This past week, our students FILLED the rocket!  So RES students will be celebrating "positive behavior" choices over the next two weeks.  These celebrations are "experiences" - not material objects.  On Tuesday, members of our student council will be telling the students about the following choices.  Please don't tell your students about it. as the students want to announce it.  We're sharing it with you so you can plan accordingly if you want to help your student decorate a hat, etc.  NO need to buy anything for this - homemade is encouraged!
  • Wed., May 31
    • "R" - "Ridiculous Hat" - Students can wear crazy hats so long as they are not distracting to learning.
    • "E" Extra Recess - 10 min. extra recess today!
  • Thurs., June 1
    • "S" - Slipper Day" - Students need to  wear normal shoes outside for recess, but otherwise slipper day!
    • "P" - Pajama Day - Students can wear appropriate pj's ALL day.
  • Tues., June 6 -
    • "E" - Extra buddy day - Students can bring in their favorite stuffed animal to carry all day.
    • "C" - Crazy hair day - Students can wear their hair however they want to today - no need to even brush it!
  • Fri.. June 9 -
    • "T" - Time to crunch - popcorn or pretzels during our final CELEBRATION!
    • 1 - 2:30 PM- "MOVIE" time in the multipurpose room.  Students can bring favorite blankets, pillows for students to watch a school-wide movie!
Lunch Bills - PLEASE make sure your lunch accounts are paid off before the last day of school.  Heather works so hard to make the ends connect, and every dollar helps!  If you want to donate $ towards someone's overdue account, just give the $ to Heather or the office.  Thanks!

Playground Rules - If your family is staying to enjoy our beautiful playground after school, that's great.  PLEASE help us by putting all toys away in the "ball" cabinet and cover the sandbox.

Photos - If anyone has any photos from any field trips they could share with me for the blog I'd appreciate it.

News from Pre-K and Kindergarten:  Our classes thank Amy and Scott Harkins of Reading Greenhouse for the tour of the greenhouses and the flowers we planted that we got to take home. Our hike to the greenhouses and seeing all the beautiful flowers was fun.

Pre-K families:  Our trip to the Montshire Museum is coming up on Wednesday, June 7th.  Please look for permission slips to be signed in your child's cubby this week.

RES PRINCIPAL'S BLOG - ROCKETS REPORT - Sun., May 21, 2017

Dear Reading Elementary "Rockets" Families & Community Members:

Our 6th graders had the privilege of attending Nature's Classroom last year organized by Mrs. Collins and the other amazing 6th grade teachers at Barnard, Prosper Valley, and Killington Elementary.  I had the opportunity to go down and chaperone Wed. - Fri. and I have to tell you what an amazing experience this is for our students.  Living with peers that they'll be going to school with in the middle school helps build friendships for that transition. The classes are outstanding and the setting is idyllic being only a short walk from the beach.    This was a positive life-changing experience for our students and one that all students should experience.  The staff there commented on how outstanding our WCSU group of students were!

Kudos and heartfelt thanks to:
  • Stephen D'Agostino who was a guest speaker to the 3/4 graders about interviewing skills!
  • The parents who drove for swimming for Gr. K and 1/2 swimming!
  • Mr. Zampini who helped clean up the winter salt from our parking lot!
  • Whoever tilled our garden!
Other Items of Interest:

SBAC Testing - This continues for Gr.  5/6 this week.  Gr. 3/4 will begin the State's NECAP Science testing this week.  We want our students to do their best and show what an outstanding school we have here at Reading!  Please help us by having your students here, well-rested, and having a protein-filled breakfast.  Please avoid having appointments during these weeks as it can affect your child's testing scores.  Students can't "study" for these tests, but a well-rested student will do better!  Please check out this website for more information - practice tests, tutorials, etc.

Pre-K 2017-18 Registration - During our Open House/Registration times on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week (8-10 each day), our 4/5 year old class will spend time with the kindergarten class.  You will still bring them to the pre-k room and do the usual routine of signing in and hand washing and then at 8 and later, they will go to the k classroom.  This should be a fun time for both classes to get to know each other and for Mrs. B. to start to get to know her k students for next year.

Kindergarten News - Please check out THIS article about the amazing time the students had with the FREE L.L. Bean Class they won through the Winter Wellness program!  Here's a few pics from their day!
