Other Items of Interest:
School Year Hours - We are starting 15 min. earlier this year because we are dismissing 15 min. earlier this year. This enables students to have a 7 hr. day, with a half hour recess, a half hour lunch, a 10 min. break, and a 45 min. special everyday. That's five hours of academic core content learning time. This year our bus will not have middle and high school students on it, which keeps our children isolated from more mature conversation and actions. Students will be taken to their destination right after school as the bus will not be sitting at Caper Hill for a half hour. Thank you for your understanding and support of this needed change. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Knight via e-mail or cell 802-779-5577.

Back to School Forms - Receiving a folder full of paperwork from school the first day can be a bit overwhelming. To try and make it easier for everyone, here are a few of the forms that you will need to complete and send back in. For those of you who have more than one child, feel free to cut and paste the info. on each form. For those of you who would like to fill them out BEFORE that first week, please find the form attached :
- 2017-18 Student Registration Form (must have)
- 2017-18 Health Form (must have)
- Free & Reduced Meal Application (optional)
Student Accident Insurance (OPTIONAL) - Parents can enroll online by the use of a dedicated secure enrollment website or by calling 877-444-5014 (beginning July 1st). The website address: http://markel.sevencorners.com
On this website, parents will be able to:
On this website, parents will be able to:
• View all of the coverage and premium options
• Review a Frequently Asked Questions section
• Purchase the insurance using a credit/debit card and receive an instant and printable confirmation of what was purchased.
This electronic enrollment is a win-win-win situation. It allows the parents to purchase the coverage on a real time basis, it allows the school district to reduce its involvement in the enrollment process, and it enables Markel Insurance Company to more efficiently administer the program.
The key to the success of this electronic enrollment is that the parents of your school district be made aware of the website. Student Accident insurance is becoming more and more important to families due to lack of other insurance for their children or having major medical plans with ever increasing deductibles & co-insurance requirements. Our Student Accident insurance program helps families cope with these issues in a very cost effective manner. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that school district officials widely publish the http://markel.sevencorners.com / address to allow all parents to review the information and determine its value to their individual family’s situation. We ask that your district webmaster create a Student Accident section on your district website in a place where the parents will see it. The above URL should be placed as a direct link in this section. Doing so will enable parents to go directly to the website. Here is an informational brochure and flier about the Student Accident Insurance.
Supplies Needed for Preschool - Mrs. Faulkner has asked that any family in the school consider if they have any of the following to donate:
- Preschool riding toys such as big wheel and cozy coupe, trikes
- Doll sized accessories--infant seat/car seat, bathtub, stroller
- Washable bean bag chairs, adult or child sized
School Supplies - There's something magical about shopping for school supplies in August. I remember going with my family and it created an excitement about the coming school year. Each class will be creating a small "supply list" <$15. per family for the 2017-18 school year that we'd appreciate you purchasing the first week of school. We'll be sending home lists with each grade and there is an electronic list HERE thought some teachers have not filled theirs out yet.
Box Tops - We are still collecting BOX TOPS. Please bring in your supply from the summer and ask your neighbors/family members to collect them for us!
Price Chopper - Please sign up to help our school earn points. Last year we were able to purchase two "character books and posters" for the school through your points. Just go to the website and register your card for our school. Every point helps!
Extra Set of Clothes - Its a great idea to send in spare socks, etc. to school in your child's backpack in case they have "accident" or get wet or messy. If you have extra/outgrown t-shirts, socks, or underwear that we can keep "on hand" in the nurses' office for anyone, donations are welcome.
Communication - We are active partners in your child's academic success. Sometimes you "hear" sound bytes of a whole event or conversation from school. If your curiosity and concerns are piqued, PLEASE reach out to your child's teacher first, and then feel free to call Mrs. Knight. We care deeply about our families and want to do what we can to solve every issue. The school phone number is 802-484-7230. Here's our contact info:

Message from our 1/2 Teacher: Ms. Denoya:
Dear Families,
My name is Leticia Denoya and I am the new 1st and 2nd grade teacher at Reading Elementary School. I am so excited to be starting my career in this community. I graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelors in Environmental Conservation in 2015 and just graduated this May from Eastern Connecticut State University with my masters in Elementary Education. I grew up in Old Lyme, CT in a bilingual household with my Argentinian parents, 2 sisters and a brother. I absolutely love being outdoors, spending time with my dog and hedgehog and being with my family and friends. This past summer I moved up here to Vermont and am enjoying exploring the area.
This year in 1st and 2nd grade we will be growing tremendously as readers, writers, scientists, and members of the community. I am looking forward to getting to know each student and helping each one shoot for the stars!
I look forward to meeting students and their families in the coming weeks. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at ldenoya@wcsu.net.
¡Hola! from the Spanish classroom…from SeƱora Elena Leibly
I am very excited to start another school year with all of
my amiguitos in Reading! This year
I plan to incorporate more authentic texts in my teaching of Spanish. Translated from teacher speak, that
means that I will be using more music, internet memes, advertisements, and
short texts written by Spanish speakers for Spanish speakers. Older students in particular will learn
and use many strategies for understanding – or getting the big idea of – a text
even when they don’t understand every word. Students will also do more “real things” with their Spanish
this year, such as reading a map and writing about geography.
Hi my name is Christine Morton; I am the Performing Arts teacher for The Prosper Valley School, Killington, and Reading Elementary Schools. I have a BA in Music from Monmouth University and a Music Education certification from Montclair State University. In recent years, I earned 15 credits in Music Technology and 3 credits in First Steps in Music Curriculum from Castleton State University. I am also the Worship Leader and Choir Director at the First Congregational Church in Woodstock. I like to garden, grow orchids, bike ride, snowshoe, and fly fish.
My goals for our students are to foster a love for a wide assortment of music and skills necessary to have a basic understanding of how music is put together. During the school year students learn songs in preparation for the Holiday Musical and the Spring Concert. Every year the students study the life of a famous classical composer. The students also compose their own songs using software available through our Music First membership. At Reading Elementary, the second grade class has a twenty-minute violin lesson; grades three and four play the recorder and grades four, five, and six play in our school band. Our music curriculum is designed to prepare children to become “Tuneful, Beatful, and Artful.”
